4. Love
4.5. Free Of Romantic Feeling
When attracted to someone, a simple visualization technique can help remove their image from your prefrontal cortex, effectively reducing interest in them. This controllable cognitive process highlights three common types of attraction:
Association with danger: Often observed in religious individuals striving for chastity, this occurs when a neural pathway is built to avoid certain thoughts or actions, projecting the person onto the prefrontal cortex to act accordingly.
Desire to possess: This involves behaviors aimed at making the other person feel good about us, driven by a sense of ownership.
Fear of losing other: This translates into a desire to mentally 'own' the person, stemming from a fear of being without them in their mind.
While the first type can create awkward situations remedied through mental dissociation, the second and third can be addressed by removing the individual from our mental focus entirely. This supports Jesus' teaching that seeking to 'own' another person is akin to adultery, as romantic attraction often centers on a subtle or overt desire to possess others.
