5. Spiritual Mindsets
5.2. Self-Preserving Suffering in Following Christ.
The phrase 'My yoke is easy, and my burden is light' can frustrate Christians who feel overwhelmed by the weight of the world. When prayer seems ineffective or depression makes everything feel dark and numb, it’s difficult to reconcile such struggles with the idea of a “light” yoke. The yoke Jesus refers to might be less about an easy life and more about His childlike, gentle mindset. His disciples, after all, still endured great suffering despite following Him.
Instead of focusing solely on eliminating hardship, we can learn to manage the mental responses that make suffering feel unbearable. While the some in the Church often emphasizes offering suffering through prayer, the Byzantine tradition teaches Jesus' consistency and obedience during the suffering is what matter, and sets an example us how to live, not so much in the suffering in itself. Psychology teaches us that mental suffering can be healed, yet some religious communities may grapple with whether to offer their suffering to God or pursue healing.
Ultimately, God values our sincere offerings. It’s okay to struggle, but overcoming mental challenges can help us serve others more effectively and with greater love.
